HEAT FLOW TO JACKET WATER ON HISPANO CAR.

The following tests to determine the heat flow to the cooling water were conducted on the dynamometer. The mass flow of the water was measured directly by weighing the amount passing through the engine in a given time. The temperature rise was measured by thermometers placed in the inlet water pipe to the jacket and the outlet pipe respectively.

The object was chiefly to determine the maximum heat flow to the jacket water which could take place under normal driving conditions. Abnormal conditions such as pre-ignition etc. were not considered as in that case a greater heat flow would be expected.

It was found during these tests that the H.P. given at the wheels remained remarkably constant over a wide range of mixture strengths, which is probably due to very good distribution. The mixture strength can be varied by means of a hand lever which operates a vacuum control in the float chamber.

The following facts were observed during these tests :-

(1) That under normal conditions the heat flow to the jacket water was greatest when the mixture strength was reduced to the point which gave max. torque for that particular speed and when any further reduction resulted in reduced torque.

(2) By richening the mixture to the value at which the torque starts falling off, the heat flow will be reduced. From the attached figures it will be seen that at contd :-
