ERECTION OF 'SS{S. Smith}' TUBE ENDS. N.SCH.2301.

This side steering tube end will shortly be standardised.

It will be noted that when the springs have been compressed to 2.400" (handwritten: ~2.317), (this length should be accurately determined by gauge) and fitted in the tube with the ball in position, the ball should just be free between the pads with no appreciable nip or slack when the washer A.{Mr Adams} is up against the end of the tube. The end should then be dismantled and the nuts P. slacked back .010" on the inner spring. The end may then be re-assembled and the washer A.{Mr Adams} should stand out .010 from the end of the tube confirming that the inner spring is the correct length. The outer nuts N. should then also be slacked back .010 so that the gap S. is now .020". When the washer A.{Mr Adams} is now pushed up against the face of the tube, the gap S. between the outer nuts N. and the face of the (handwritten: 15%) washer should now be approx. .010". If it is much more or much less than this, the load on the springs is not equal and their poundage and length should be checked.
