Via Boat Mail OY 6/b/Aug.30.40 Serial No. 209 August 30, 1940 Gun Barrels Rolls-Royce, Ltd. Derby, England RH.{R. Hollingworth} Attached copy of note from Lascells contains following information: U.S. Arsenal uses for barrels a chrome molybdenum vanadium steel which is not any S.A.E. standard, but is rather like S.A.E. 6130 with added molybdenum. Arsenal will accept open-hearth steel provided the macroetch shows good results. Transverse tensile tests are specified. S.A.E. 4140 used for rifle barrels. 4140 will machine better at a given Brinell than the straight carbon steel suggested in your last paragraph. I believe you will not want us to go further in getting material prices for gun steel in view of Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}' cable of August 21 - ".....Cancel inquiries on gun parts."
