This cycle of events could be repeated each time with a gradual reduction in the time before bad missing occurred, but ultimately it was considered necessary to replace the points altogether though in doing so we cannot say that as accurate bedding of the points was initially obtained as would appear from your recommendations to be desirable".

It will be understood that we have purposely put down what we should consider to be a rather bad case as a model of the kind of information we should like to receive on any particular case where trouble has been experienced and/or complained of necessitating the attention of your depot.

We appreciate also, that it may be somewhat difficult for you to get the whole story of any particular case, and would say that where this cannot be done it would help us if you would give us what information you have got of several different cases from which we can form our own conclusions as to the fairly exact nature of the average case.

A possible cause of irregular action not referred to in our model case above, is the reduction of the contact point gap due to a combination of rubbing block wear and temporary temperature effect. Information therefore, concerning the value of the maximum gap at the time of complaint of irregular running would also be of assistance.
