Query regarding the replacement of a roller bearing with a ball bearing on a gearbox reverse shaft.

X7310. We notice on a drawing we have here that the roller bearing on the rear end of the reverse shaft originally schemed at WW., has been replaced by a ball bearing. We should be very interested to know the reason for this. We presume it is a question of cost. Full advantage has not been taken of the use of a ball bearing in this position as the distance piece at the forward end could have been eliminated. Possibly the practice was not continued.
