On looking into this job we find the following conditions:- The spring holding the felt washer and cup in position is extremely weak and not strong enough to maintain a gas tight joint when the pedals are depressed. The friction between the hole in the felt washer and the pedal stem being greater than the tension in the spring, the whole assembly i,e, spring, cup and felt washer is carried away from the gap plate by the pedal stem when the latter is depressed. When the hole in the felt washer enlarges after use, the free length of the spring is insufficient to maintain a gas tight joint due to it being less than the travel of the pedal, hence the spring, cup, and washer can move about freely on the pedal stem, and set up the rattle complained of. Since the length of the spring is controlled by the choc-a-bloc length, the only satisfactory remedy may be to incorporate the gas tight joint of the 25/30.HP. [Handwritten] GWH{George W.
