This w has made the exhaust noisy and gives a poor life.
WW. are now in the process of getting out designs to cure this
deficiency which should not take long when we have the necessary
cars to work on.

CARBURATION.
We have a water heated induction pipe on the SS.{S. Smith}
We are not satisfied with water heating. We shall have, some
how, to get satisfactory exhaust heating on this car. Experi-
mentally we are working on the problem now. We think that this
is the most difficult proposition we have to tackle on the SS.{S. Smith}

VACUUM PUMP.
The vacuum pump on the SS.{S. Smith} which draws fuel from
the tank to the autovac, is not equal to its work under one or
two exceptional sets of conditions. We think that this is only
a matter of giving the correct proportions for the pump.

CLUTCH.
You will recollect that the clutch did not stop
very well on the car which we sent to France. We have since
found out that this was due to incorrect clearance. We do not
think there is any reason why the SS.{S. Smith} clutches should not be
as good as the present standard.

BRAKES.
We started off with the wrong proportion of lever-
age. We have taken the matter up with DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} and he is making
the necessary modifications. The cars that we have rigged up
with the experimental modifications to alter the leverage are
quite satisfactory. There will undoubtedly be no difficulty
here. Owing to incorrect dimensions on the dust cover we have
had mud and water penetrating to the rear brake shoes in France
and making them ineffective. We have had this trouble before
