We have had several cases of the aluminium brake shoes cracking. In each instance the rivets have been flush with the material and one can see by the appearance that the shoes have been very hot. We have also noticed that if the brakes are adjusted with a small amount of clearance and then used excessively, they are liable to seize due to the fact the the aluminium shoes expand at a greater rate than the drums.

In order to overcome both these faults, it has been arranged that the ferodo brake linings shall be thicker (.312") and that the rivets shall be countersunk so that the full amount of wear can be obtained from the lining before the rivets rub. Also, we are reducing the number of rivets.

Our chief reason for mentioning these points is to show that the aluminium brake shoes have certain limitations. It is necessary that they should be protected from the excessive heat when the brakes are applied continually. The brake fabric forms an effective protection as long as a large number of rivets do not come in contact with the drums.
