My dear Grylls, I must apologize for not writing to you earlier, although I have tried on one or two occasions to get in touch with you by 'phone, and in despair I am now writing these few lines in order to lessen the blow which I am sure is coming my way. In the first case, referring to the Bentley Pinion Bearings, I note your remarks on this matter, and apart from the difficulty of constructing the bearings with the cages locating on the balls, or on the outers, I am certain that neither of these alternatives would be of any advantage, and I am more than convinced that the only solution will be to provide a complete and definite passage of oil through the whole bearing. You will remember that during my recent discussion with yourself and Mr. Rowbottom I pointed out that the passage of the oil was too free on the rear row of balls, with the result that little, if any, of the oil was passing through the front row of balls, and with "E.P." lubricant there is no doubt there is a distinct tendency for sludging up in such instances. I am convinced that it is this tendency which is causing the wear on the front row cage, and I am sure that if your arrangement were modified so that the oil of necessity passed right through both rows of balls, your troubles would practically cease.
