To-By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} c. to-GJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} RE STEERING COLUMN - CONCORD - GOSHAWK. V4264 V4239 We send herewith N.Sch. 1299 shewing the modifications we wish to make to the controls above the steering wheel. (1) The windows of the quadrant have been omitted and the lettering re-arranged. The quadrant should be of nickel silver or some other metal which will not tarnish, and blacked. The lettering on 4.Goshawk 11. has turned green. (2) The levers are shewn as aluminium bronze die castings, heavily electro plated. Those on 4.Goshawk 11. were so weak that they bent. (3) The springs are shewn larger in dia. and are to have a lighter load, and less rate. The blacking on our instruments is very poor indeed. On 4.Goshawk 11. which had only been 3700 miles, the black had rubbed off the quadrant, whilst it was noticed that whereas the enamel of the bought out instruments was quite good, that on ours was badly worn. We suggest that it is of urgent necessity for us to learn more about this process, and if possible find out what other people such as Messrs Lucas' and the instrument makers, and camera and field-glass manufacturers do. The enamel on some of these instruments wears wonderfully well. We would like a model set of controls sent to us as soon as possible.
