2). We would inform you that the design shown on our Sketch No.100/1197 is covered by a patent which necessitates our supplying the complete gland, comprising carbon seal, rubber washer, and spring. This gland in lots of 200 would cost approximately 2s.3d. per complete assembly; this price would be subject to modification according to the method by which you propose to drive the carbon ring.

The above material should be heat treated as follows:-

Heat up to 950 degrees C. to 1000 degrees C. and soak according to the mass and quench in oil. Temper in oil 180 degrees C. to 200 degrees C. for two hours. The Brinell hardness after the treatment should be not less than 418.
