Dear Rothes,

I should like to congratulate you on the performance your tyres put up in the T.T. race, and also on the service which was available on the Course through Dr. Young and his staff.

I was delighted that Hall finally decided to run on these tyres, although I wish he had made up his mind a little earlier, because it is clear now that we could have used a smaller size and got half way through the race comfortably.

I must say that after our experience last year it was very pleasant to have intelligent co-operation.

I have written to Mr. Dixon and enclose a copy of my letter. On mature consideration of his qualifications, I feel it is wrong that I should encourage him to believe that he is likely to be successful with Rolls-Royce Ltd. I think he is bound to start with a very big handicap. I have tried to explain this to him, as being a married man he has of course definite responsibilities. Obviously I cannot make the decision for him, but his present prospects must be exceedingly black if he feels he is going to be better off starting a new career under such unfavourable conditions.

I had a delightful holiday, covering over 3,000 miles through France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland and Italy, some of it over exceedingly bad roads and at high speeds. Before starting I fitted a set of the latest type India tyres, and at the end of the trip was agreeably surprised with the condition of the treads. Mr. Hall also tells me that he had a similar experience on his recent run in Italy.
