CAR WORK - CHANGE GEAR.

When the box is fitted with any form of constant mesh gears with jaw clutch change, the jaw clutch should have many teeth, and every other one, or two and one, or even three or four and one, should be cut back to allow plenty of time or backlash for the first 1/4" or so of engagement.

Also the ordinary box or any like the above would undoubtedly be benefited by fitting a rubber or other resilient coupling, either in front of or close behind the gearbox, preferably both. The rubber block type suggested by us for magne to drive may be a good one.

Any backlash or elasticity in the transmission would help. We generally get very little of either in RR, which I have always thought was the reason for most of the complaints against ease of changing in RR. cars.
