Messrs. Peto & Radford,
50, Grosvenor Gardens,
London, S.W.1.

For the attention of Mr. G.R.N.Minchin.

Dear Sirs,

We have now had a failure of the first of the new 40/50 type P & R RR.11 batteries. This battery was put on one of our cars which went out to France for a 20,000 mile test and has already completed 28,476 miles before failure, during which time no doubt a considerable amount of overcharging took place, the switch being left on all the time. (We have now arranged that in these long daylight runs, charging will take place for the first and last quarters only. This condition will not be so far removed from the ordinary condition in customers' hands.)

The battery was received charged on 16.6.24, and passed through our routine tests with satisfactory results. It was then put in our life test set until 1.4.25 when it was put on an experimental chassis on which it has done 28,476 miles running.

In the circumstances, perhaps, this may be considered a reasonable performance, nevertheless it is thought that you might like to have a report on the condition of the two cells which failed, as observed by the undersigned's assistant, and accordingly a copy of this report is enclosed.

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.
