The only point about the mounting of bumpers is that they should conform with the SAE tolerances for height 17" above ground ±1/8" per inch of effective face of bumper for the front and 17" ±1/4" per inch of effective face of bumper for the rear, measured to the horizontal center line of bumper face and with tanks full but without passengers or other load.

The fore and aft location, and shape of bumper are mainly arranged to give the necessary clearances and to suit the style of coachwork and fenders fitted. Standard widths of bumpers mounting bars are 1-1/2, 1-3/4, 2, 2-1/4, 2-1/2 in. Note that the SAE Standard has recently been changed and was formerly 18" in front and 19" at rear.

See SAE Handbook Supplement attached.

The headlamp is provided with a double filament bulb - one filament being set on the centerline of the lamp in focus with the reflector, and the other being set slightly higher. The filament in focus is the main driving filament [original word 'dimming' is struck through] and other throws the beam downward for use in traffic. The change over is made by use of a R.{Sir Henry Royce} Bosch dimming switch described below.

The lamps are fitted with sockets for 3 cables, the third being an earth return to avoid having the return current from the lamps pass through the enamel on the lamp base. It is held at the loose end on one of the small belts holding the flange to the crossmember under the radiator.
