X5080 W/S. To H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} from W/Ltd. E/Ltd.2/HP.15.2.34. c. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hdv Sticking Air Valves and Exhaust Explosions. H.20/H.9.2.34. We attach herewith some information on the progress that has been made with regard to overcoming the complaint of sticking air valves. With regard to explosions in the silencer, we have at the moment nothing to offer which will improve the present carburetter on the 20/25 HP. The incorporation of a throttle edged slow running device is difficult and would entail considerable modifications to existing carburetters to apply it. It is doubtful therefore in view of the adoption in the near future, of the RR. S.U. type of carburetter, whether the complaint justifies the expense of the investigation involved in producing a palliative. We should rather suspect the two complaints go hand in hand. We do not think that explosions in the silencer on this car are at all violent so long as the carburetter is functioning correctly and the throttle is closed whilst coasting. A slightly sticking air valve will immediately cause exhaust explosions on the overrun. We expect therefore if we adopt one of the two available schemes for preventing air valves sticking that the explosion complaint will be reduced in parallel. W/Ltd. | ||
