To RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} 113 Kingsbury. June 9th.1937. BENTLEY CONN. RODS. To confirm Telephone Conversation. A set of conn. rods being taken out of the Stores to fit to 260.G.A. it was noticed that the liners had been filed to fit the conn. rod housings and in doing so numerous small falts had been caused during this operation, consequently, a true bedding was not obtained. With the hammering of the bearings the high spots would be flatenned out leaving the liners loose in the shell which we are trying to avoid by giving a .002" nip on the bearings. Had the stock of conn. rods not run short we would have returned these liners for your inspection. We took the opportunity to examine a further set which had just been fitted and although they had been filed there was not the flats as described above. I enclose a sketch showing approximately the position of the flats on the back of the liners. ------ Despatching of rear axles. In practically all cases of axles despatched when they arrive, one brake compartment is found full of axle oil, unfortunately this means relining that side with new liners. The damage is done in transit by the railway co. Will you please instruct the Despatch people to drain the oil out before packing and, as you suggested, tie a label on NO OIL. to avoid trouble when being fitted.
