Rolls, Royce Limited, Nightingale Road, Derby. Dear Sirs, TUNGSTEN CONTACTS. [STAMP: RECEIVED 20 JAN 1917] We beg to call your attention to the use of Tungsten in place of Platinum for Electrical Contacts, and would point out the following considerations:- 1). Tungsten is harder than Platinum, and has a much higher Melting Point, that of Tungsten being 3,000° C. whereas the Melting Point of Platinum is 1,755° C. 2). Tungsten is much cheaper than Platinum, and nearly as cheap as the usual Gold-Silver alloy, used for cheaper Contacts. We supply Contact Rivets made of a solid Tungsten head to which a Steel shank is electrically welded. The shank can be spun down by an ordinary spinning tool. Hoping we may have the pleasure of dealing with your early enquiries, We remain, Yours faithfully, THE L.P.S.
