1166 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}5/MH.{M. Huckerby} 31st. August, 1939. Messrs. Smith's Jacking Systems Ltd., Edgware Road, LONDON, N.W.2. For the attention of Donald W.Sessions, Esq. Dear Sirs, Replying further to your letter of August 24th. concerning the new suggested jack for dealing with heavier cars. We think the initial experiment could be carried out more cheaply than by making a completely new jack to your drawing Y.54464. We are chiefly interested in reducing the bending on the tubes, and we think that for an experimental set we could safely screw the new 1.5 diameter tube into the present diameter body, reinforcing that piece of the zinc casting if necessary by a steel band. We think it would be advisable to increase the length of bearing control in the fully extended position, although this will add slightly to the closed length of the jack. We certainly wish to retain the ball mounted foot for the first experimental chassis. We should like to have your views on this experiment, and if you agree that the suggestion is practicable will you send us an estimate for making up such a jack. Yours faithfully, for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
