SpectreCodename for Phantom III Gearbox.

N. Sch.4320 herewith gives the design which we suggest for the 2nd speed pieces to prevent working out of mesh for permanent use should N. Sch.4298 (the temporary scheme) prove satisfactory.

We have lengthened the 2nd speed pinion bearing base to reduce the angle through which the pinion is rocked when under load.

The bore of the outer sleeve is increased to give more room for the trepanning operation on the driving piece.

The teeth are increased in number and reduced in diametral pitch giving a slight increase of effective length as the pointing takes less length.

The driving piece is the only part with a castellated bore as the main sliding piece bears only on the tops of the shaft splines.

The driving piece is not counterbored as for the experimental piece, as this feature may not be necessary.

We suggest that this drawing is not detailed until we have tested the parts to N. Sch.4298 and of course the various pieces concerned should still be held up for both SpectreCodename for Phantom III and Wraith.
