FHR4/H81012. X421 COPY. Westwood, Crowborough, Sussex. 8th October 1912. [STAMP: W.M. RECEIVED 10 OCT 1912] [Signature: W Wormald] Mr Johnson from F.H.R. to Mr Spinney. Re Wire Wheels. With reference to Mr Spinney's note ref. RDS1/B22712. The front hubs for the R.W. Wire wheels are much too heavy to be passed. There must be some modification in the shape of these to get rid of a great deal of the metal. The object of the present arrangement of levers and cross tubes is to avoid any risk of toggling, but I shall be glad to see the steering tube laid with extreme lock in each direction with the cross tube shortened, which would make more room for the joints. I think the wire wheels can be still further pushed on, i.e. more than the 1" shown in the drawing. The joint for the cross tubes is I think not so good as the present arrangement. Therefore, if the present arrangement can be used when the cross tube is shortened I should prefer that we do so. The whole thing does not seem sufficiently near perfection to justify our making it and I should be glad if we could find a similar method of adjustment to the one we have but somewhat neater as I do not think the split arrangement shown and used by Lanchester | ||
