I had three separate conversations yesterday with Mr.Buckland on this question, firstly, over a slight misunderstanding about the size of the case. There is to be a difference in this, but it is to be from back to front and not in diameter I understand, and therefore apparently the difference in size of case will not interfere, we hope, with their being fitted to the existing instrument panel.

We have not yet heard from Smiths to what extent they can modify or cancel the instruments at present on order, but we are expecting information re this from them now any day.

Mr.Buckland confirmed yesterday that except for stocks or the readjustment of stocks they could get into production and start deliveries in about three months from now with instruments having larger trip figures, provided you can give them the word "go" without further delay in this particular respect.

I have been broaching the subject of concave lighting because we should naturally like to introduce this on P.II's now that we are continuing for some indefinite time with this chassis. Here again Mr.Buckland confirmed that the only real difference this will entail is that the instrument must have a bezel in front. At first it was thought it must have a bezel and glass, but in view of the fact that if we start using a glass on the speedometer we shall probably have to alter all the other instruments so as to have separate glasses on those, they finally agreed that in view of the glass front of our instrument panel instead of separate glasses to each instrument they could probably omit the glass in the speedometer but the bezel must remain. This, I take it, would merely increase slightly the clearance between the glass in the panel and the faces of the instruments. For the moment we cannot see there is any objection to that. Would you kindly confirm.

Would you now please let us know whether, subject to a clear statement of the number of instruments that you still must accept from Smiths either altered or unaltered, you could instruct them to put in hand supplies of these instruments with larger figures and the introduction of concave lighting. Incidentally I must mention that the concave lighting will absorb
