Rg.{Mr Rowledge}5/DM.{D. Munro} -2- September 15th, 1933. With 87 octane fuel we have a good margin, so far as detonation is concerned, and some tests we have been doing make us believe that we could raise the rating of the Goshawk engine considerably, using this fuel, thus leaving us a good margin for further development of power from the Goshawk cylinder. An important advantage of the 87 octane fuel is that, apart from the question of the engine being safer when it is free from detonation, the weakest maintained fuel consumption is considerably improved. You will see this set out in an early report on development on Goshawk engines. We should be glad if you would confirm that we may use 87 octane fuel for the type tests of the Goshawk engine. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
