4183 To BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from DA. {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to BJ. Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} DAA/M11.1.28. X.9340 X.7340 X.4183 EAC.10 UNIVERSAL JOINT. We send herewith N.sch. 2416 shewing the proposed 5" universal joint for use on EAC.10 It is intended to follow the practice of the Mechanic's joint almost entirely, and the middle view is arranged to do that. In case however the sliding arrangements are not entirely approved of we have shewn the upper view with a sliding device similar to the present Spicer joints. We think the middle view is the one to proceed with until further instructions We also shew on fig.3. an alternative construction for eliminating the apparent quarreling between the bearing blocks and the joint rings. R. {Sir Henry Royce} has not finally said whether we think this alternative should not be proceeded with for the moment. We have arranged for the joint to give a clear movement of 15° on either side, which we believe is about twice as much as it is ever asked for. This joint is shewn mounted on EAC.10 gearbox and the hypoid g axle, but we wish to try the joint on EAC.1. first. We have therefore shewn on Ns. {Norman Scott} ch. 2536 (herewith) an adaptation for EAC.1. by making a special joint member for the front end. DA. {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
