SPECIFICATION OF INSPECTION AND TEST.
Preliminary Insulation Test and Inspection.
(a) Lift the opposite pair of earthed brushes (two brushes only) and test the insulation of the machine by applying through a lamp an alternating voltage of 200 between the insulated terminal and the motor carcase, when the lamp should show no sign of being lighted. If the lamp is lighted, then lift the other pair of brushes and again test and so determine whether the fault lies in the armature or field windings.
(b) With all brushes lifted see that armature revolves freely and does not foul nut and bolt connections on field coils.
(c) Inspect brush mechanism and make sure that all brushes have the necessary freedom without being slack; that the spring tensions are suitable, and that the brush springs are clear of the sides of the slots in the brush holders, so that the full tensions of the springs are exerted on their respective brushes. Also make sure that neither the insulation nor the conductors of the brush pig-tail connections are in any way damaged,
Note:- It is possible that a spring which is noticeably weak may be cracked and requires replacement.
(d) See that the insulated Contd. terminal on the carcase is not loose.
