FROM DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} PDR. C. to HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} C. to HY.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} SECRET. JAP.A3. GEARBOX. Herewith we send unfinished scheme of the proposal for the actuating mechanism. The scheme is that of the latest epicyclic 3rd. speed gearbox, and compared with the P. 2. plate interlock it reduces the size of the box a small amount and shortens all the striking forks, the reverse a considerable amount. Also as the striking forks make simpler forgings and the work for the plungers is concentrated on to one piece it is thought to be less costly. We have examined the Chrysler box and see that the springs for operating the Maybach jaws are fairly powerful - maximum 30 lbs. -. From this we have concluded that it would be undesirable to lengthen the pendulum lever as we at first proposed. These springs on the Chrysler are mounted on the striking rod in the same way that ours are, and the ratio between the length of the fork and the length of the control on the rod is approximately the same.
