RE "GOSHAWK II" GEAR BOX. [Handwritten]: X4247 X1824

Please ascertain as soon as ever possible, whether the Hoffman type of roller bearing would make the gear box more silent.

We do not mind how they are applied as a temporary arrangement, but they should be fitted to the pinion shaft driven by the engine, and for the side shaft. It would not matter about the driven shaft carrying the front end of the propeller.

With reference to the broken side shaft bolt which has come to hand, we believe this is truly a mechanical break due to it being fully tightened with a riveted on nut out of square. I suggest, to prove this, we should make spherical nuts and cap washers, and test exactly the same size and design of bolt.

R.{Sir Henry Royce}
