Dear Sirs, For attention of Mr. Robotham. We beg to thank you for your letter of the 11th inst. to hand today. We note that the pre-compression of the bellows of the shutter thermostat is an advantage from your point of view, as tending to open the shutter in the event of puncture of the bellows. Whilst we think that a movement of .243" from the extended position may be increased, we do not think it would be possible to obtain a movement of .425", as this would result in the smashing of the bellows. We propose to instruct our Works to compress the bellows as far as it is safely possible to do so during assembly and before exhausting the instrument. We are of the opinion that a movement of .350" will then be possible. We note that you wish to retain the existing standard filling for this instrument, and that you are returning the sample for refilling with standard spirit. Yours faithfully, p.p.S.
