1113 To G.W.Hancock Esq., C/O Hotel De France, Chateauroux, Indre, FRANCE. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}1/AP.23.2.37. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} being away I am replying to your memo of the 6th. inst. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}6/JAB. in which you say you have received no reply to your suggestion of deleting the cup in the valve spring top washer. The Design Dept. say that owing to the inclination of the cylinder bank no oil can stay in this well. A scheme has been issued to LeC.5494, a copy of which I am sending you, in which the valve spring top washer is a close fit on the valve stem to prevent oil running down. This is being tried out by F.Dodd on his valve rig. Whether your suggestion has been adopted or not you will see that there is no well in the top washer on this scheme.
