ENGINE GEAR QUIETENING ON ALL CHASSIS.

With regard to memo' Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}19/KW.9.7.34., it makes very interesting reading to know that we can expect the new train of timing gears that will help cut out the enormous trouble we have in quietening these on our present rigs.

We are of the opinion that it is most important to take steps in the designing of getting gears which "stay put" rather than spend a great amount of time and expense in manufacturing elaborate quietening rigs afterwards. However, since we have to quieten the gears that are made, any help that may be obtained in getting the correct rigs is very acceptable.

We would point out that the suggestions made in the above memo' have almost all been put before the plant supply dept. some considerable time ago as a perusal of the enclosed copy of suggestions dated the 11th Dec. 1933 will show.

In addition to the suggestions made in this memo' coupled with the positions expressed in Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}19/KW. 9.7.34., we would call attention to the necessity of considering the fitting of a better flexible drive to the Dynamo etc.

These drives whilst being ostensibly flexible, are in our opinion too solid, and we have gone to the point of experimenting with these ourselves, and have decreased the solidity of both the rubber discs and spring plates, and find in almost every case this experiment has succeeded in curing the rattles complained of.

Finally, we would again say that we are glad to note the interest that is displayed in this matter from the Experimental Dept. as it would appear now that with their help we shall be able to obtain some of the rigs that we have been so long demanding.
