Front Brake Compensating Shaft.
25/30 and Bentley.
With reference to the various means for preventing the endwise clearance of the compensating shaft in the clutch casing from being reduced below the determined amount, we prefer that shown by the top view on the drawing made by BY/TWD.{T. W. D???Aeith}
The diameter of the shaft is reduced by .030 to form a shoulder against which the offside brake rope lever is driven and secured. The clearance is set by varying an adjustment washer on the nearside. The clearance having once been correctly set can only be reduced when cold by the fitting of a thicker washer. No greater safeguard than this appears to be necessary.
The clearance when cold should be between 15 and 20/1000".
The stress in the reduced part of the shaft is 7,500 lbs/sq.in with 200 lbs. load on the brake pedal.
