SECRET. HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} WST 86135 To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} re SpectreCodename for Phantom III Instrument Board. Copy to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hf.{H. W. Frost - Coachwork Inspector} Fg. Thanks for E.8/HP.3.11.34 with blue print which is returned herewith. For the second SpectreCodename for Phantom III we approve of Scheme 'B' but should like to make the following suggestions: 1. If, as we assume, instruments will have to be made up specially, we should have liked to see the new numerals of the design recently selected and which I handed to you at Derby at a recent meeting. 2. I note the speedometer only reads up to 80, which of course should be 100. 3. We consider that the spacing of the water temperature dial should be altered so as to make it more easily legible. We see no reason why it should not start off at 50° instead of 30 which would help in this direction, and on all these dials it might help a little if the arc were increased as marked on the blue print. 4. We hope that a special effort will be made to improve the illumination of the instruments beyond our present standard. For instance, if we can get a light on each side of the large instruments, we should not need such a bright light as we do at present where the light is only on one side. 5. Re the three coloured lights, we suggest that their purpose might be usefully indicated by a letter on the front of each - for instance, the one for dimming and dipping might have 'D' on it, the one for ignition - 'I' and the one for petrol 'P'.
