HYDRAULIC SHOCK DAMPERS.

In order to ensure that the gland is satisfactorily fitted up when the hydraulic shock damper leaves the fitters on production and goes to Test, we wish to establish a simple test by means of which the efficiency of the packing can be checked on the bench.

We would like you to try a number of glands on the lines of the tests adopted when we were endeavouring to find suitable material for the gland packing. We suggest that a pressure is found which a good gland will withstand for 2 minutes or so without leaking. During the test, the shock damper arm should be rotated to increase the possibility of the gland leaking.

We should also like to try a gland which we know is not well fitted up and make sure that this would be rejected by the test.

We also suggest that the dampers which are about to be run on the bumper should have their glands tested so that we can see if the results obtained agree with their performance on the chassis.
