| 87941. Hotel de France, Chateauroux(French test region), France. 25/7/31. To Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /Rm. {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} From GWH. {George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} 25-RX. We have received your letter of the 23/7/31. and appreciate your remarks re. weak mixtures. We can assure you that we are not running with a weak mixture and have not attempted to obtain the results we have been getting with the petrol consumption. Our acceleration would suffer if we did so, and we can at full throttle go over full weak without falling off. You can be quite satisfied in this respect. We have certainly been using various kinds of petrol and have noticed that we have either been weak or strong with these grades of petrol, but the control setting has been used accordingly. I feel convinced that my last report to you is the cause of the failure. We are now running with 6 new exhaust valves and hope to obtain some definite data. Re. Shock Dampers. We have increased the poundage of the L.F. in the rear dampers to 110. The damper setting is now 120 H.F., 110 L.F. with no holes in the valves. This setting has definitely improved the riding and holding qualities of the car. We feel it is the maximum we can go to, any increase would definitely spoil the low speed comfort in the rear seats. We have noticed that the rattles from the body have increased, but the condition of the doors etc. are prone to rattles. We can now drive on any kind of road at a speed consistent with the surface without any fear of the car diving or being uncontrollable. The brakes can be applied and the axle holds the road. We do not propose to make any further alteration. We consider the riding qualities equal to any present standard cars. The joggles of the steering is entirely due to slackness in the steering box, no loading of the front dampers or cross steering tube make any difference. We hope you appreciate this. The joggles are damnable; it is the only expression one can use. [Signature of G.W. Hancock] G.W.H. 3 1/2% Nickel 6 Silchrome Ex. 6. 1 Set Valve Sp. {Mr Spinney} | ||
