x500a HOTEL DE FRANCE. CHATEAUROUX. FRANCE 7th May 1936. To. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} From. G.W.H. RE. OIL SUPPLY The 25/30 HP. Engine is adequately supplied with oil. The oil pressure is good, and oil temperature not excessive. We have known all along that precious little oil gets to the rocker shaft when slow running after a hard drive. The arrangement is such, that all the released oil goes to the timing gears and what that pipe cannot take gets up to the rocker shaft. In the case of B.56.BN.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} the leak from the main crankshaft bearings is such, that there was no supply to the rocker shaft under 1800 engine revs. with an oil temperature of 80°c. We have had to do something as the valves or the pad of the rocker started squeaking. We observed the supply to the timing gears and came to the conclusion that half the amount could be spared. We therefore, plugged up two of the holes in the feeder nozzle to the timing gears thereby putting sufficient back pressure to get oil up to the rocker shaft. We are obtaining sufficient oil to do the necessary lubrication. I know all about Sr. and his Bentley and was surprised to hear you had said there was nothing to worry about. He had washered up the release valve. I warned him not to over do it as there would be no oil left for timing gears etc., I've already said in my report on the Bentley (not yet finished) that a larger capacity oil pump is necessary, and as you say a long [handwritten: two] stage relief valve. We are leaving here at 2.P.M. for Lyons to meet Sr's Representative. ---------- G.W.H. | ||
