Design, testing, and production recommendation for Phantom rear axle jacking pads.

Bailey - Chief Engineer} ORIGINAL Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/AJL1/LG26.5.27. PHANTOM REAR AXLE JACK PAD. X4124 X7350 We have fitted to 12-EX chassis jacking pads on the rear axle to drgs. G.75561/2/3. The object of these is to bring the part of the axle which is used for jacking purposes nearer the ground and more in line with the front axle, so that we do not require such extreme jack dimensions as are at present necessary. The range required has been increased by the use of 6.75" balloon tyres. By using this kk jacking pad we shall be able to employ the latest type Dunlop Jack which it is hoped to standardise. Without the jacking pad, the Dunlop Jack will not meet all requirements. The chassis has been ballasted to represent the weight of a heavy closed car viz: 1 ton 8.5 cwts. on the rear axle and in addition three passengers were on the rear seats. The car was lifted successfully off the jacking pads several times without failure or 'match-boxing' of the jacking pads. We consider this a sufficient test of their strength. The pads are designed to be fitted to new axles. It is recommended that they are standardised and that they should come into production as soon as possible to ease the jack situation. Another scheme of jacking pad has been designed that can easily be fitted to existing axles. This has not yet been tested, but will be fitted up to a chassis shortly and be reported upon.
