Childs}12/JH. OUR REF. SHE/RS.{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary} SUBJECT 2nd March 1939. Attention of Mr.R.M.Child. Dear Sirs, We have closely examined the 656 R.B. Distributor Serial No.114 that you have returned to us, and would state that the wear is very excessive for a mileage of 500. The shaft has worn oval at the top and bottom by about .005", the centre being only oval to the extent of .001". The housing has no perceptible wear, the "NO GO" gauge used in manufacture not entering either end, and the "GO" gauge shows a parallel bore. We believe this would not be the condition if the shaft were bent, as in this case the centre of the shaft would be worn on one side and the two ends on the opposite side. The shaft tongue can only transmit a force normal to the face of the tongue providing the tongue is not tight in the drive member. We have checked the position of the shaft tongue and find it within .001" of centre. Referring to the enclosed blue print No.9-A-9921, if coupling misalignment resulted in a force as shown by the arrow, we believe you would get the wear we have found, and as indicated on the drawing in pencil. We suggest you check this point on the engine from which this unit was removed. | ||
