-3- We are gaining experience on the Stromberg carburetter every day. Having been, however, partially responsible for the adoption of this carburetter, we should like everyone to appreciate that we are going to have certain teething troubles with it, which might have been avoided if we had not been forced to go into production with it at such short notice. The Experimental Dept., with the other officials, have agreed that we should take the risk with this carburetter. It is unfortunate that we have to do the same thing with the SpectreCodename for Phantom III. We expect to get severe criticisms until we have had 12 months' experience of any new carburetter and induction system. BENTLEY. We have now got some bearings for this car, as explained in Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}5/KW.3.1.36. We are still running continuously on solid Hall's metal bearings to get as much experience as possible. We have had further trouble with the Borg and Beck clutch running 4,500 r.p.m. endurance on the test bed, and believe it may be due to the fact that the pressure plate is not balanced as a unit but only in conjunction with the cover plate. Borg & Beck's are having back all the clutches they have so far delivered and rectifying them in this respect. We are going into production with this clutch because an examination of Hancock's, which has run 15,000 miles on the road, shows excellent condition. A complete inspection is being carried out on B-56-BN{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} which so far, apart from the failures reported in France, seems to be in excellent condition. Since the 20/25 and Bentley crankcases are interchangeable, we have not yet had a Bentley crankcase to the final detail drawings for the same reason as given for the 20/25. At the moment the 20/25 is having preference, and 6-B-IV will not be completed until the 15,000 miles 20/25 has been passed to G.W.H. We should like confirmation that this is the agreed policy.
