SS.{S. Smith} CROSS STEERING TUBE.
Herewith we send N. sch. 2797. shewing the cross steering tube end with the balls increased to 1.250 dia.
It will be seen that in order to clear the 20" rim we have altered the angle at which the cross steering lever lies to the axis of the car from 15º to 16º. The geometry is still quite good. In point of fact the cross steering tube end appears to clear with the original 15º, but it is rather close. We have done this in preference to shortening the cross steering lever as the latter has to be considerable before the gain is much.
To overcome the trouble mentioned in Derby of assembling the joint we suggest a set screw and washer for giving a sufficient deflection on the spring to enable the ball end to be got in.
We have shewn two springs approximately 1000 lbs. equal to the present 1250 lbs. on Phantom, and a 1250 lb. spring which will give more friction than the present standard. Evidently there are other loads which could be tried if necessary.
