X.4256 Re Goshawk II - Back Axle.

We send herewith a print of "N" Scheme 712 shewing comparative stresses on the existing 40/50 and the Goshawk II back axle, in which we have endeavoured to take into account the different methods of loading these tubes. The Goshawk curves shew a somewhat similar distribution of stress to the 40/50, though the actual amount reach is not so high. We have suggested that the distribution of stress might be more equal in the tube if the latter were made parallel instead of being increased in diameter towards the centre. The idea of this is that the weight of the centre box is taken by the tie rod.
