Chassis No. GNK-17. - E.G. Elliott Esq.

I found on arrival at Northampton the dynamo on above chassis would not function. Examination showed excessive heat. Solder had melted at the commutator connections, brush gear discoloured, control brush seized in holder by solder thrown from commutator.

I first examined all electrical connections, particularly the charging circuit, i.e. dynamo connections both on dynamo and distributing box, battery connections in dis: box, ampere meter, dis: block on battery box and battery itself - all were good.

I fitted a new dynamo which I saw on test here, whose output was when cold 12.8, and hot 11.5 amps.

I ran the engine standing, getting dynamo as hot as possible, (Weather conditions at Northampton made a road test impossible) and obtained results on car as on test here. Running on magneto ignition with head, side and tail lamps burning, I had about 2.5 amps. to the good, running on battery ignition with lamps burning I obtained a balance, on the charging side if anything. I found also the points on the make & break badly pitted. I made these good but they will not face up again, and I think it would be policy to forward Mr. Elliott a new platinum pointed screw. He knows of this matter and endeavoured to persuade me to agree R-R. {Sir Henry Royce} should supply this free of charge. Not knowing the history of car and finding Mr. Elliott a very difficult gentleman to deal with, I would not commit myself, but assured him I would report this point through the proper channel at Derby. I think also 2 or 3 field fuses should be sent to him, they are a special fuse in glass case, and 2 only are supplied with a new chassis.

I had a lengthy discussion with customer re the output of dynamo, batteries etc. He sat in the car and arranged control levers at various points and checked dynamo output with me, and agreed there was an improvement and that he was satisfied. I pointed out carefully there might be a further slight drop in output when engine was running under road conditions, - that his daily running of car was abnormal, the car being used in daylight for shopping, and no road work till darkness set in. He agreed on this point also, and I left him in a more pleasant mood than that with which he met me.
