(5) RE TEMPERATURE OF WATER.

Regarding the maintenance of the temperature of the water, we certainly think that the louvres in front of the radiator with a thermostat control is the only one worth consideration, but unfortunately on 4 EX. the quality of the louvres appears to leave much to be desired, and they [handwritten over 'are'] already worn. We should expect that they would rattle on a rough road, and they would certainly rattle on an engine which has not the virtue of running smoothly. It is difficult, however, to suggest how anything better can be obtained quickly, but we advise you to use your utmost endeavours to obtain an equipment at least equal to this in efficiency, but of better quality. We believe that it is not really necessary to use a relay system, and we should prefer that the thermostat was effected by the hot water either leaving or entering the radiator. It does not matter whether this water that affects the thermostat comes from the upper or lower part of the radiator. It can be the direct water or it can be a bye-pass. We shall attempt to make a finished design of this as soon as we can. You will notice that the thermostat does not permit of the use of alcohol, for obvious reasons I am glad.

(6) STARTER MOTOR.

As far as we have examined it, the Bijur starter motor appears to act quite satisfactorily. From the charts sent, we should, however, recommend you to use the revised Bijur which takes less current and does not attempt to turn the engine so quickly. [handwritten in margin: wrong decision] As we pointed out, the drain on the battery would otherwise be excessive and probably leave insufficient voltage for other parts to act satisfactorily. You will remember that our starter motor was designed and the winding arranged especially
