On looking at our present type of axle it seems excessively large and is too heavy. I am very keen, therefore, on lightening it. But the disaster of having cars on the road with axles which are too weak would be so great that we must make some definite strength tests on our axles so as to know exactly what they will stand before they are standardised. Calculations are very good indeed but not quite all, and the strength should be definitely tested by practical experiment. For shocks and impact tests I suggest that a large piece of timber, of known size and weight, etc. should hang on ropes as per sketch. X339 Dragged back to a stop by rope, record taken increasing the bump until permanent set is detected, then repeat on other wheel. Elevation. of Known length say 10ft one block for each wheel. use stop End view | ||
