To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} FROM Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}:
re Purchase of American Cars.
Cenr to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}Rs.{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}

I am in receipt of E.9/MP.17.2.34. I agree the recommendation that we should purchase a 16-cylinder Cadillac.

I see a cable from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} to-day about bringing the car over on triptyque. I should think this was the best thing to do because, when we have finished with it, it would be very difficult to sell here on account of the high tax and much better to send it back to America to be sold second-hand there.

Re Terraplane I note you agree that it would be more useful to buy a 6 than a straight 8 as we already have a sufficiently good example of the latter.

I agree this also because as mentioned in my former letter, it may help us on engine mounting etc, with the Bentley, but as I also said in my former letter I think that we can buy one over here and I will cause immediate enquiries to be made on this point.

Thanks for the information re com.reds - stroke ratio and I note that the proposed straight 8 adheres very closely to the recommendation made in Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}'s cable of the 14th.

Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}
