To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} c. RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}10/AP.25.6.37 VISIT TO RANSOME & MARLES RE BENTLEY PINION BEARINGS. Since the use of these bearings our Inspection Dept. have measured each one for slack and etched on the bearing an end float of .0005 (half thou.). As the Ransome & Marles drawing shows a preload of 0 to .001 we took over to Newark two bearings received from RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/Cy. with slack measured in these Works of .0005" and .00025" respectively. If these bearings had really been slack they would have been a reason for noisy axles. Ransome & Marles very quickly demonstrated that they were preloaded ¼ and ½ thou. As a result of this visit we have handed to HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} a sketch of the R.{Sir Henry Royce} & M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} apparatus for measuring accurately and very quickly bearing end float. We are also having made a gauge block for checking pre-load and will demonstrate to the Works the method of making the necessary measurements.
