To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Starting Gear. BY20/P.251018. X.3328 RE STARTER MOTOR Will you kindly note that Messrs. Lucas have pointed out that the modification in position that you made to the ball bearing, which has been sketched on drawing L.487A. enclosed, makes it quite impossible for them to get their windings in. They state that the ball bearing must be in the original position as it was shewn on the drawing referred to. In order to retain the general design for connecting the starting motor to the engine, it will be necessary for Messrs. Lucas or ourselves, to arrange for the connections to the brushes to be taken out radially, as shewn on scheme 338 herewith. Messrs Lucas state that they cannot make the modification in question, although I have had their designer, Mr. Turner, over at our works and attempted to convince him that this is what must be done. I take it that if Lucas will not make the modification then it will mean that we will have to produce drawings for the motor complete and have them made ourselves. The alternative to this is to adopt the type of drive which we schemed out at Derby, prior to the present scheme being arranged for at West WitteringHenry Royce's home town.
