For the attention of W.A.Robotham, Esq., Messrs.Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Expl.Dept. Derby. Dear Sirs, Further to your letter of the 29th ult., with regard to the varying speed at which the piston of the air pump descends, we find that in these first pumps there has been a variation in their speed, and we believe that this variation has been largely due to the manufacture of the pumps themselves in the early stages, i.e. the strength of the springs, friction of leathers etc., We have, however, now established a standard for the speed of the pump when attached to the air line and tank unit, and immersed under a full head of petrol. We find that the time for the descent of the MAJOR SEGRAVE'S "GOLDEN ARROW" was fitted with a NAPIER-LION ENGINE and CLAUDEL-HOBSON CARBURETTERS. | ||
