'SS{S. Smith}' VALVE ROCKER LUBRICATION. X7060

We have experimented with several schemes for rocker lubrication on the SS.{S. Smith} engine and the one we are using at present has proved quite satisfactory.

As well as lubrication of the rocker shaft it was desirable that there should be an adequate oil supply to the ball end of the push rod and also down the push rod to lubricate the tappets. Also of course was required an adequate supply to the valve pads and down the valve stems, though less oil was required in this direction than to the push rods.

We have found that it is highly desirable to get oil quickly to the tappets, ball ends and valve pads after the engine is started up from cold as this gets rid of a lot of valve gear noise. It has been the experience of the Production Test Dept. with both the Phantom and 20 HP. that more oil was wanted for the rockers when the engine was cold, both for the reduction of wear and reduction of noise.

The scheme in which the rocker is not drilled through on the valve side does not give as much lubrication as it should like when the engine is started up from cold and all parts have become drained of oil. Oil does not reach the ball ends and valve pads in appreciable quantity until the engine warms up.

With the original rockers we have considerably
