X 1263 (Experimental Dept.) Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/JBD{John B. Dixon - Fuel Systems}7/M 9th February, 1937. The S.U. Company, East Works, Bordesley Green Road, Adderley Park, BIRMINGHAM, 8. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. Skinner. Following your conversation with Mr. Hives yesterday when you suggested that diaphragm assemblies should be changed at our Service Depots. This was no doubt put forward with a view to reducing the cost of the pump to us, as you would have less liability under the guarantee. We would accordingly be interested to know (1) What reduction this arrangement would make in the purchase price of the pump. (2) What price we should have to pay for the diaphragm assemblies per pair. (3) Would there be any refund on the armature and spindles if returned to you. We are certainly in agreement with you that the perfect diaphragm is still a very long way off and that they are the weakest part of the pump. This being so, we would be glad to have your opinion as to what length of life we can expect from the diaphragms. Admittedly the working conditions may not be the same as those with which your standard pumps have to contend but as the G5 material is not affected by heat, the experience which you already have on your standard pumps would be of considerable value to us in deciding whether to replace them as a routine job after either a certain period or mileage, or leave them until the faults become apparent. | ||
