AMMETER.
This is a Weston Model 301, moving coil, central zero, 20 ampere ammeter. Electrically it is so connected as to indicate all current passing in or out of the battery, except the heavy current for the starter motor, a needle deflection to the right indicating "charge", and left "discharge". Thus the dynamo out-put is exactly indicated if no consuming apparatus be switched on; and if the dynamo be off, the current being consumed by lamps, etc. is shown. If the dynamo and lamps be on, the reading gives the balance in or out of the battery.
STARTER MOTOR.
The starter motor M is shown in fig. 49. It is carried on a longitudinal tube B, and drives by a chain C, the second or layshaft of the gear box through the medium of the jaw clutch D (see wiring diagram P. ). An epicyclic reduction gear at E on the motor, together with another such gear on the gear box, gives a total reduction between motor armature and crankshaft of 23.3 to 1. The chain wheel G on the layshaft is provided with a friction drive device for the purpose of protecting the motor and its gearing against damage in the event of a back-fire. An adjustment for the chain drive is provided at F.{Mr Friese}
